I’ve worked at Jump24 for over seven years now, and most recently as a lead developer. That means I move between a lot of projects, applying my knowledge and jumping in to help other developers when they need it. A lot of my time is spent on Laravel development, but I also really enjoy working on the infrastructure for applications, building virtual servers on AWS using Terraform.
I’ve always had an interest in computers. Throughout my education I knew I wanted to work with them, but I wasn’t really sure what that would look like. I did a college course in computing that covered computer networking and all sorts of other things. In the end web development caught my interest because I enjoyed seeing the end product of something I’ve worked on. I completed a degree in development and spent a lot of personal time on little projects, so my passion just continued to grow from there.
Why I love what I do
I enjoy working at Jump and I’ve stayed for so long because the management always has a vested interest in everything we do. When you work for someone who truly cares about what you like to do and about the quality of work that gets sent to clients, it makes everything very easy and you want to do well for them and yourself. I’ve found that that encouragement gives me a bit of extra motivation to grow professionally as well.
The fast-pace of working with Laravel and PHP means that it’s impossible to get bored of what I’m doing. There’s always something new to learn and there are always better ways to help build applications faster so I can focus on delivering the requirements of each project. As a company, writing tests gives us confidence that the code we’re writing works, and using Laravel helps us with that.
I love that Jump is always looking for ways to connect with the tech community, especially in and around the Midlands. I think for people who are just starting out in the industry or have gone through a code school, the events we put on and take part in give them somewhere to go, speak to like-minded people and learn from each other.
What’s next?
Jump is always growing as a company, and we strive to be a well-known name in our industry – if someone wants to work with a tech company in the UK, we’d like to be the first people they come to.
