From legacy burden to long-term partnership
Taking ownership of a monolith legacy system and iteratively rolling out critical improvements.
The challenge
Go Car Credit urgently needed help with their outdated internal systems. They relied on these systems for daily operations, and the problems were mounting - stability issues, difficulty adding features, security concerns, and constraints on business growth.
The systems were difficult to maintain due to complex architecture. Previous attempts to improve them had failed. They needed a partner who could provide long-term support whilst the business continued operating.
Our approach
We chose iteration over transformation. Big-bang rewrites meant upfront risk and disruption - the same path that had failed before. Instead, we'd learn as we went, making calculated improvements with minimal disruption.
The strategy was foundation-first. Prioritise security. Handle critical fixes. Build the right foundation for long-term success rather than quick wins.
Integration was collaborative and hands-on. We shadowed their team, worked directly with QA, and got stuck in. We believe the best way to learn legacy systems is by working on them. We set expectations early - they knew the system better than us, we'd need their expertise for testing and rollback plans.
What we did
-
01
Joined for three months in 2016, working closely with their team to thoroughly understand the application and business areas
-
02
Iteratively improved the platform over following years - upgrading legacy CakePHP and creating Laravel components for specific operations.
-
03
Built an API now being used to migrate substantial code from the legacy system.
-
04
Introduced scalable AWS cloud solution and integrated third-party solutions like e-signature and digital document transfer.
-
05
Automated tasks via APIs and business rules, reducing manual processing.
-
Technical stack
- CakePHP
- Laravel
- AWS
The impact
We turned their legacy burden into a long-term partnership. Nine years on, we're still there - a fully resourced development team supporting the platform full-time.
The progressive modernisation continues. Code systematically migrates from legacy CakePHP to modern Laravel whilst operations never skip a beat. Third-party integrations improved efficiency and customer service. Autonomous processing reduced manual work.
They found a partner who understood that legacy systems need patience and consistency, not dramatic rewrites. A partner who stayed. The burden became confidence.
What they say
Not only did Jump24 take on the challenge of our legacy platform, they also helped us greatly improve and modernise it. They have worked closely with us to deliver key business initiatives and changes to our internal systems. Jump24 have been, and continue to be a pleasure to work alongside.
Work that speaks for itself.
